Searching For A New Home

Buying a new home is always a compromise between the “dream” home (in the country/stylish flat etc) and practicability (commuting, schools, affordability etc).  It does therefore make sense to undertake some initial research as to:-

  1. The cost of intended properties;
  2. Your mortgage capacity, see separate briefing note – if relevant; and
  3. The sort of neighbourhood you are intending to move to, if you are new to the area, www.upmystreet.com is a helpful resource
  4. The following websites may also be helpful;

www.findaproperty.com – this site lists local state schools and their performance data, crime statistics and average local property prices.

www.mouseprice.com and www.houseprices.co.uk both use Land Registry data to list what properties in a given postcode have sold for.

www.zoopla.co.uk also has detailed information about property prices.

Having created a set of criteria for the home you are looking for, eg, price range, number of bedrooms, locality, whether you are prepared to countenance renovations, now is the time to approach the Estate Agents.
